For the second year in a row, the 1996 Junior Knights will compete in the International Silver Stick Finals. London won the Regional Qualifier in Stratford beating a tough Ancaster team, 2-1.
It was a close game that could have gone either way but in the end, the Knights played hard for the final 5 minutes and won the game with this effort.
Brandon Papp was the catalyst as he scored both London goals. With six minutes left, Papp joined the rush and broke free for a solid shot that eluded the Avalanche goalie. With two and a half minutes left, Papp again found the puck - this time at the point. His shot, which appeared to be tipped, but was not, found the twine.
Goalie Riley Brown had to be sharp as Ancaster had a number of opportunities in the first two periods. For the tournament, both Brown and Kevin Zupko kept the Knights close each game.
The Knights didn't allow Ancaster a shot on goal in the final 2 1/2 minutes thanks to a strong forecheck.
With the win, the Knights return to the Silver Stick Finals, where they will face the best teams from across North America. The Knights are familiar with many of the teams who have qualified, including Sault Ste. Marie, Oakville, Georgetown, Newmarket, Livonia (MI), Grand Rapids (MI), Chesterfield (MO), and Long Island (NY). The finals will be held in Newmarket in three weeks time.
This tournament win marks the third Championship this season for the Knights, to go along with a Finalist finish three weeks ago in Oshawa.
